that was a mother who had kids in the newtown high school. so i just thought it was -- it's interesting that even in that community where they've gone through all of this, there are different opinions on how you best deal with this. i speak to some people on the gun control side. i spoke on to one person who has a very hard line on this, the author of a book "more guns less crime." he says every single time there have been implementation of tougher gun laws, it hasn't done anything to really remove gun crime, it to distinguish gun crimes. now, that's not totally true. there are examples around the world. australia in '96 with a mass shooting and they implemented tough gun laws. mass shootings haven't happened since. in britain it took time. we had our own horrendous killing of small children in a scottish school. there was a spike in gun crime after a handgun law was introduced. it lasted four years, and aafter that we see a decline of gun crimes in britain. there are example where is the law is changed and the gun crimes have diminished. >>

we're told that arne duncan, the secretary of education, is also in newtown today. he is spending some time talking to teachers, spending some time talking to families as well. the focus now, of course, shifting to the elementary school and when those students are going to go back to school. we found out earlier today they are going to resume classes, the sandy hook elementary school students, that is, on january 2nd. all the other students in town started yesterday. when they go back to school on january 2nd, they will be at chalk hill middle school, and the principal at that school will be a very familiar face to folks here, donna page is a retired principal at sandy hook elementary. she'll be there to greet the students and teachers when they return after the holidays, andrea? >> craig melvin, the latest on another sad day, one of so many sad days in newtown, connecticut. thank you. >>> president obama today made it clear that when it comes to guns, doing something is better than nothing. >> if there is even one thing that we can do to prevent any of these events

time, but in just one weekend a sadness has set in with the news of a massacre of innocent children in newtown, connecticut, followed by the loss of our wonderful colleague, senator danny inouye so i will leave this extraordinary institution and experience with a heavy heart for those who have been lost just in the last few days. i do want to thank the people of texas for asking me to represent them in washington. i want to thank the many people who have served on my staff for almost 20 years. i have to say i am touched that both benches on both sides of this room are filled with my staff members who have been so hardworking and so loyal and have produced so much in 20 years for our state and nation, and i thank them. i do want to thank my colleagues and all the people who work here -- senators, but also those who work behind the scenes to make our lives as good as they can be with the hard hours that we all have. those who keep our buildings safe and clean, who work in the libraries, the shops, the cafeterias, and who guide tens of thousands of tourists through our nation's beautiful capitol
